GCSE Text:
The vehicle lengths that are travelling on a Ferry to France are shown in this table:
a) Which group contains the median vehicle length?
b) Estimate the mean vehicle length
c) What percentage of the vehicles are greater than 6 metres in length?
Suggestions:
This is a question created to practise a common GCSE Maths question. Students need to remember how to handle ranges instead of discrete data statistical calculations. Students often take 3-4 minutes to answer this question, and marks will of course be awarded for workings and partial answers.
Teachers could extend the learning by considering:
- Vehicles up to and including 5 metres in length travel for a cost of £65 one way or £125 return. Vehicles greater than 5 metres up to and including 10 metres travel for a cost of £95 one way or £165 return. Vehicles larger than 10 metres cost £150 one way or £230 return. Calculate the income to the Ferry company for all the vehicles in the table if they are all on a return ticket.
