The table below shows the prices for the same radio in four different shops, each of which has a sale on.

a)  Calculate the asking price for the radio in each of the four shops, taking into account their sale offer.

b)  Which shop is offering the radio for the lowest price?

Suggestions:
This is a firm favourite when teaching or recapping percentages, and also mental maths if you prohibit the use of calculators. It is normally takes a class 5-6 minutes to complete this, but as a similar question could appear on the Foundation or Higher GCSE papers, it works very well in class. For differentiation in lower ability classes, certain students could be allocate one of the shops, to recap on a particular skill.  A similar video exists with easier values which would not need a calculator.

Extension Ideas:
Teachers could extend the learning by considering:

• Shop 1 charges £2.95 for delivery, shop 4 charges £4.95 for delivery and the others offer free delivery.  How does that impact the asking prices, and is the same shop still offering the lowest price if you want it delivered?
