GCSE Text:
Patrick wants to buy 12 furniture handles as part of a DIY job at home. Handles can be bought for £2.43 each, or in packs of 6 for £13.06 per pack. How much money will Patrick save by buying 2 packs of 6 instead of buying 12 individual handles?
Suggestions:
A simple arithmetic question that could be asked as part of a Foundation GCSE paper. There are multiple ways to solve this – students sometimes choose to find the saving per 6 and then double it, whilst others compare the prices for 12 straight away. Either is fine of course.
Extension Ideas:
Teachers could extend the learning by considering:
- At a discount hardware store, the same handles are sold in packs of 15 for £26.00. Is this a better deal? Explain your answer using Maths and showing all workings.
